<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;">The
day approached quicker than I would have thought and before I knew it I
was at the starting line along with my RBO trainer, Marilee. <i>This is it</i>,
was all I could think along with the loud roaring crowd. I was so
excited I thought I was going to puke but there was no time for that.
Soon we went off and it felt like any other training day on a sunny
day. </span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;">The first
water station we encountered was in front of a small church, people
were giving out as fast as they could the water. The floor was covered
in tiny water cups, everywhere till the next block, cheering from the
crowd could still be heard from the first mile we past so far. I kept
running and drank the water in a few gulps, tempted to go back for more
but I couldn't slow down.</span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;">More and
more people were passing us until we hit the middle point, from there
our constant pace brought us up where the main group pasted us from
before. It got to the point where every water station made me run faster
and almost cry with joy as I kept thanking the people
endlessly. Especially at the water stop where they had brownies. They
were a piece of heaven. The ring of fire made me feel like I part of a
video game ((THEY HAD THE 'LEGEND OF ZELDA' THEME SONG IN THE BACKGROUND
OMG I WAS INTERNALLY SCREAMING WITH JOY AS I PASSED BY)) and I just
wanted to keep passing more obstacles like that, it was
very motivational. After passing that, about 3 miles was left, I
couldn't feel my legs but somehow we kept running. </span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;">When we got to the
last lap around Lake Merritt, it was there when I felt like stopping.<i> Can't I just swim across the Lake?</i>
The finish line was literally across from the lake and as I kept
running the cheering got louder. I just wanted to drop dead but I had to
keep smiling for the camera I'm pretty sure I looked like I was crying
in one of the photos. </span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;"> Half way
around the lake where the last water station was located a resident
from one of the apartments on the side of the lake was shouting
out encouragements from her third floor apartment. <b>"YOU CAN DO IT. I BELIEVE IN YOU GUYS, YOU ARE ALL INCREDIBLE. SO CLOSE, ALMOST DONE."</b> It was like an angel from heaven, distant yet so clear and it was from that moment I thought to myself<i> Hey...I actually like this.</i></span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;"><i> </i></span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
<span style="font-family: times new roman, serif;"><i>BUT WHY IS THE FINISH LINE SO CLOSE YET SO FAR????</i></span></div>
<div class="gmail_default">
</div>
<div class="gmail_default">
No
matter what happens the last mile seems impossible but it's not. It
makes one cry internally and whine about every little thing from the
shining sun above to the tiny pebble that's been a bother in the shoe
from the last mile. There was one thing for sure; I had
to concentrate to store energy for the last few feet from the finish
line. I wanted to finish in a dashing speed and I did but I ended up
slowing down a few inches from the finish line. I thought was going to
die at the last few steps from the finish...it was a good thing Marilee
was there by my side to keep me walking afterwards. I'm pretty sure I'd
just faint at the last minute, the last picture taken that day may not
show it but I was dying. Though I am happy. </div>

I had been training for the half marathon
since January and I felt that I was ready. The day before the
half-marathon we ate a delicious pasta dinner thanks to the people who donated to make it possible. When I woke up on the day of the half-marathon I
couldn't really believe that the day had rolled by so fast and that I
was actually going to run 13.1 miles. I ate a good breakfast
and I headed towards the BART station.<br />
<br />
I got to the BART station and I
kept thinking about the race. I walked to Snow Park and I was amazed by
the amount of people that were there. I couldn't believe that so many
people were there it was awesome. I signed in at the RBO tent and
shortly after I saw Mr. Schooler, Ivan and Alex. Mr. Schooler told me that
the race was going to start soon. We stretched and after that we walked
towards the start of the race. There were a lot of runners and we
joined them.<br />
<br />
As I stood there I was excited but also a little nervous.
It was my first time running this distance but I felt that I was ready.
After waiting for about five minutes the race began! We started jogging
at a slow and steady pace. I looked around me and it was awesome to be
able to run in the middle of the street. As I was
running I could her people cheering. We ran about two more miles at a
steady pace and then we started speeding up. Before I knew it we were
already at the fourth mile. I kept running and we ran by the Saint
Elizabeth water station. They handed us water and then we kept on going.<br />
<br />
On our sixth mile we ran inside of a tunnel and it was a really cool
experience. It was nice to have a lot of different things to look at
while we were running. There was music on our race route and I felt that
the music really gave me a boost. I felt great until I hit the ninth
mile, this is when I started to feel tired. I ignored this and told
myself that I wasn't tired and that I could keep going. I had four miles
left and it didn't seem like a big deal to me. I kept going until the
11th mile and that was when I started to slow down. I felt like my legs
were really heavy and I felt that something was holding me down.
Mr. Schooler told me that I couldn't let that voice in my head bring me
down. I had to remind myself that I could do it. Mr. Schooler really
helped me out a lot and he told me that I would finish.<br />
<br />
We made it to
Lake Merritt and I remembered all of the times that I ran around the
lake. I thought about all of the times and all of the training that I
had done. The last mile was really tough for me as it seemed like I was
ready to give up. I no longer felt strong and I just wanted to walk the
rest of the way. Mr. Schooler told me that I had already ran around the
lake before and that today was no different. He told me to keep going
and to not give up. I didn't give up and I tried to distract myself from
the running by looking at all of the places around me. This helped me
to not think so much about the running but I also felt like the running
would never end. I had to push myself to keep going no
matter how much I wanted to stop. I kept going and after what seemed
like a long time I saw that we had passed the lake. We had less than
half a mile left and I kept going with everything that I had.<br />
<br />
Mr. Schooler pointed towards the finish line and I saw the red banner in
the distance. I started to jog faster but as I got closer to the finish
line I felt discomfort in my right leg. I pulled my right calf muscle
and it felt like my leg was harder to move. I did my best to ignore it
and I pushed myself through the finish line. When I finally stopped
running I couldn't believe it. I received my medal and I put it around
my neck. At that moment I felt really happy and I was very proud of
myself. I had finished running the half-marathon.<br />

It was Sunday, March 24, 2013. The big day
was here at last and the nerves had definitely kicked in. Even though I
had made it to every training run and even did some runs on my own, I
was still feeling butterflies in the pit of my stomach. Even though the
night before, we had carb-loaded on a nice pasta dinner, I was feeling
as though I was not going to perform well. However, I knew it was time
to prepare myself for my big race. I grabbed my running tights, my RBO
shirt, and the other clothes I needed to get ready. Once I was dressed I
put my shoes on and went out to get breakfast. When I was done with
breakfast I knew it was time to go. I grabbed my bib, water bottle,
water bottle holder, and my Clif Shot Blocks. I got in the car and tried
to settle all the nerves that had set in, but it was not working.<br />
<br />
<div>
I arrived at Snow Park and saw all the people gathered there and grew
even more nervous. However, I went to check in at the RBO tent and put
my bib on anyway in an attempt to keep myself busy. Shortly after this, I
found Chelsea, my RBO volunteer, and realized it was almost time for
the race to start. I did a few simple stretches to loosen up my muscles
and began walking toward the starting line. Yet I did not realize until
that moment just how many people were actually doing this and when I did
my nerves seemed to subside. I realized that I put a lot of effort into
this and all I had to do was run. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Suddenly a noise went off, confetti blew in the air, and the huge
mass of people began to move forward and I did too. However, it started
off in a slow walk and then turned into a jog and eventually into a run.
Finally, we were off! </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
It seemed really interesting to be running in the
middle of the street, but to my surprise it was a lot more fun than any
other route I had been on. It was nice to get to look up and gaze at the
buildings. It really gave me a chance to appreciate the beauty that
Oakland possesses. We followed the huge mass of people and found little
things to talk about. When we reached the mile one marker, we all
exclaimed that we only had 12.1 more miles to go. I still felt like I
could go on for days. I kept running and running and then we go to a
certain point when we realized we were going to run into the tunnel.
This was one of my favorite parts because it felt like I was a car. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We kept running and running and finally we reached one of the
booths. We had people cheering for us: yelling, holding signs, and
waving around noise makers. Somehow it was great to have random people
cheering us on. A short time after we passed the booth we made it to a
water station. These nice people were passing out water to us and
luckily it was one of many water stops that would be along the way.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We passed mile two, three, and then finally when we got to four, I
decided to take three of my Shot Blocks. They were pretty chewy and I
had to drink a lot of water with them, but the important thing was that I
kept moving. We passed booth after booth, water station after water
station, sign after sign, and with each step it became more real to me. I
was running a half-marathon and it did not even seem like it. It did
not even seem like I was running at all. The movement was so natural to
me at this point. The music placed throughout the course gave me the
extra boost I needed at times to keep going. When I saw that we were
going to run under a ring of fire, I was a little uneasy, but I figured
it was safe otherwise they would not have placed it on the course. So I
kept running, but by the time I passed mile five, six, seven, and eight,
my body was definitely beginning to feel the pain. Moving definitely
got harder, but I told myself I was not going to walk any part of this
because I wanted to be able to say, "I ran a half-marathon." So I ate a
GU pack and kept moving.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The sun was a lot brighter now, but I still had four miles to go so
I kept moving, determined to finish this as fast as I could. However, I
was sort of cursing the fact that we had to run these miles in the
street because my knees were definitely not happy about this. However, I
then passed the mile ten marker and saw that it was time to run around
Lake Merritt. This was where my eleven weekend runs had taken place. I
had run around this lake so many times, however I knew this was going to
be the hardest time, but I was wrong about that. As I was running
around the lake, there was a water station that helped me make it to
mile eleven. By this time I was definitely tired, and I wanted to stop,
but I just kept moving. I passed mile twelve and saw another water
station, this time I drank some of the water and splashed the rest in my
face. This gave me an extra boost I needed for the last mile. That mile
seemed incredibly long, but I finally saw the finish line. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I picked up
my speed a bit, a little too much, and almost burned out before I
actually made it to the finish line. However I slowed down enough to
catch my breath and then sped up to cross the finish line. My legs were
tired, I was hot, and sweaty, but I finished. All the work I had put in
was worth it. I finished the half-marathon in 2 hours and 24 minutes and
I could not help but be happy about my greatest accomplishment in life
so far. </div>

I am
not going to lie I did get really nervous an hour before the race, but I
began to stretch and work out the kinks relatively quickly. When it was
time for all the runners to report the starting line, I was not
expecting there to be so many people. The sea of people stretched down
the block and then I heard the number of people participating: 4500. I
was exactly in the middle of this sea of people and once the horn blew
and the confetti cannon went off Don and I began running.<br />
<br />
It was really
weird running down empty streets and for the first mile all I could hear
was the footsteps of the thousands of runners. The first two miles were
probably the most hectic and the most tiring. By the time I reached mile
four I was already in the rhythm of running and there was no stopping.
By the time I reached the last three miles around Lake Merritt I was
ready to just get to the finish line. Even though I was tired and
feeling like I was going to die, Don kept me motivated and pushed me to
make sure that I made it in time for my goal of 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Once we hit mile eleven we stated to speed up. Those last mile was a
push and the realization that all of my hard work was coming to an end
set in.<br />
<br />
Once I saw the finish line over the last hill, I began to
sprint. During that last sprint to the finish line I felt like I was
going to throw up, but as I passed the arch and finished, the feeling
was like no other. At the finish line I thanked Don for all his help and
was then congratulated by the two people in charge of RBO, Tod and
Lesley. They told me that of all the RBO runners I was the fifth to
finish out of the entire group. I later found out that I finished under
my goal of 1 hour and 45 minutes and also placed third in the group of
males 16-19. After that I received my medal and got myself some coconut
water. I heard that there was a chiropractor at the RBO
tent giving out free massages and I did not hesitate to have my legs
massaged.<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
This whole experience running for RBO and for St. Liz has been one
of the greatest in my high school experience! I never really expected
that I would be running a half marathon or anything above six miles at
this point in my life. I know after this I am sure that I will continue
running and maybe some day in the near future I will be running a full
marathon.</div>

This was a great time for us to get together and talk about the past 11 weeks of training and to give each other pep talks for tomorrow! This was the first expo for all of the students so they enjoyed walking around checking out the vendors and getting free stuff! Eduardo was glad that Zico was sponsoring the half marathon because he loaded up on Coconut Water.<br />
<br />
While touring the Expo Eduardo, JJ, and Ana Laura ran into Tod, RBO founder. They were happy to give him a hug and say hello to him. I'm sure he had some inspiring words for them.<br />

We are two days away from running the half marathon and relay. There are 20 students running the half marathon and 1 student running the relay. I'm so incredibly proud of each and every one of them. They have done an amazing job keeping up with the training and preparing themselves for their first big race. <br />
<br />
Tomorrow we are going to the Expo together to pick up our bibs then we'll have our pasta dinner. I know they will do amazing things Sunday morning. Whether they are the first of our group to finish or the last, they are ALL winners in my mind.Lesley Schoolerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17333610127913616664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606872588928327240.post-43401418779466214132013-03-09T20:00:00.000-08:002013-03-18T08:01:45.335-07:00Eduardo Recaps 12 MilesRunning 12 miles this week did not seem like it was going to be much<br />
of a challenge. I had ran multiple times that week and had been<br />
anticipating the run. Coming in the morning on Saturday, I was ready.<br />
I did some pre-stretching and made sure that I had hydrated myself. As<br />
I walked in Mrs. Schooler told me that one of my fellow running club<br />
members, Jonathan, had some shot blocks. Based on the taste of the GU<br />
we had a few weeks prior I was willing to try any other form of<br />
energy. I was also looking forward to the chocolate milk that RBO<br />
promised us once we finished the run.<br />
<br />
Running around the lake the first time was probably the hardest. I kept a steady pace and made<br />
sure that I tried to get into the motion. After the first lap I felt<br />
pretty good and somehow on the second lap I wound up leading the<br />
entire group. I was amazed, even though I was at the same pace I began<br />
with, I was all the way in the front of the group. I kept this lead<br />
all the way though that lap and once I reached the end of the second<br />
lap I took my shot blocks and was amazed on how much it tasted like<br />
candy. If I was able to I would replace all my meals with it. I wanted<br />
to eat all it, but I kept my cool and went back to running. Going<br />
through the third mile the shot block worked. I had enough energy to<br />
keep going and I began to speed up while still pacing myself. By the<br />
time I reached the last lap I made sure to drink some water and then<br />
took the last of my shot blocks.<br />
<br />
The last lap I kept that same pace and was just ready to finish. My feet began to go numb and as I saw<br />
the tent I began to sprint to the finish. Once we finished Don told me<br />
that we had ran 12.8 miles in 1 hour and 42 minutes. I did not realize<br />
how fast I was going, but I was happy to know that I was close to my<br />
goal of finishing in under an hour and forty five minutes. After that<br />
I ran to the cooler and got my chocolate milk. That was probably the<br />
best chocolate milk of my life. After this run I feel ready for the<br />
half marathon and am prepared for whatever comes on that day.Lesley Schoolerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17333610127913616664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606872588928327240.post-28177443859361276682013-03-09T19:55:00.000-08:002013-03-18T07:59:34.744-07:0012 Mile Run<br />

The students ran 12 miles today. They actually ran a bit more than 12 miles but we didn't tell them that before hand. They ran around the lake 4 times. Mentally I thought this was going to be a tough run for most of them. Not only was this the furthest distance they've run but it's also hard to run the same route 4 times. They did mix it up by changing directions but still it was going to be a huge challenge. <br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNRUBcATK5_U0si9lXIIlGytNlyqTFwXR6R2Y1i1lKu4IUeE39Gv9Q4E24sDaDoIsn4f6zv0gmgqPcKVAaJSEizYNN73cRYat2sAfRT1DSCRoHAcwBBsIL6kPd2XjrkCs2s06G7WDUI0q0/s1600/IMG_3368.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNRUBcATK5_U0si9lXIIlGytNlyqTFwXR6R2Y1i1lKu4IUeE39Gv9Q4E24sDaDoIsn4f6zv0gmgqPcKVAaJSEizYNN73cRYat2sAfRT1DSCRoHAcwBBsIL6kPd2XjrkCs2s06G7WDUI0q0/s320/IMG_3368.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />The kids did great though! They each had either Gu or Clif Shot Blocks to take during the run. They were practicing with fueling while being out on long distances. They really worked hard and did amazing. I was so proud of them.<br />
<br />
Junior was strong and stayed in the lead the whole time. He's going to do great at the half marathon!<br />

Anthony cracked me up. He definitely took the idea of refueling while running to a new level. Whenever we saw him running he was always eating something. I found out after he finished that he ate three Clif bars and 2 Gus during that run!<br />

Everything started off as it
usually did and I decided that I would jog at a faster pace than usual
since it was only 5 miles as opposed to 10 or even 12 miles. I started
my run confidently and I did my best to keep my form during the run. The
lap around the lake felt very fast and it seems like each time that I
run around the lake time goes by faster and faster. This makes me feel
awesome and I try to run the lake a bit faster each time. I remember
that on the very first training session 9 weeks ago at Lake Merritt
running 2 miles seemed like a big deal to me. I used to get tired after
running my first mile and I didn't really know how I could run 13.1
miles. As the Saturday runs started adding up I noticed that I didn't
feel tired after running a couple of miles. I was able to build up my
endurance by increasing my mileage each time. As the half-marathon
approaches I will continue to run and give it my best.Lesley Schoolerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17333610127913616664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606872588928327240.post-56475826504273476442013-03-02T20:05:00.000-08:002013-03-08T20:19:26.432-08:005 Mile RunToday we had a recovery week. but I'm pretty sure it was for everybody else. I thought it was going
to be hard and I was going have to stop for a breather or just start
walking, but I didn't walk at all. It was a lot easier than what I
thought and all the hard work I have been putting in is paying off. I went
from running out of breath fast and getting tired, to learning to keep a
good pace and keeping my breathing under control. Seeing that I have
come a long way and have learned so much makes me more excited for the half
marathon. </span>Lesley Schoolerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17333610127913616664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606872588928327240.post-51746741589463864542013-02-23T16:00:00.000-08:002013-02-26T10:38:15.875-08:00Ana Laura's Recap of 10 Miles<span style="font-family: Noteworthy; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px;">The
feeling I got finishing these last 10 miles was great! I felt like I
was on a natural high - I didn't know that it would feel that
incredible. I thought I was going to be super tired and sore
but I actually wasn't - especially because I didn't walk any of it.
They also introduced us to Gu and it helped so much. JJ and I said that
it will become our new energy go to energy. It was awesome!! </span><br />
<br />
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; font-size: 18px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 24px;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Preparing
for it mentally I would tell myself that I
couldn't give up and even if I had to walk I was going to finish it. Also I had to prepare myself physically. During the week JJ and I ran 4
miles each day. It helped me a lot to speed up a little bit and she
helped me a lot on just pushing me and telling that I could do it.
During the 10 miles JJ and I ran together the whole time and she made it
seem so easy for me, well for the both of us. If at a point I would see
her tired I would tell her that we could do it and she would do the
same. We just really helped helped each other. Personally I don't think I
could if done it without her support. She was literally there with me
from the beginning to the end.</span><div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">On January 5th I started this journey
as it just being something else to do. But now it's all I think about,
all I want to do is keep working hard to finish this and make this the
best experience ever. I run everyday just to make sure that, that next
mile I run will be as easy as the last. It's a completely different
experience but I'm super glad that I am doing it. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">I'm even more happy that I
started this journey with my best friend and we will both finish it
together. Running is really becoming something that my body asks for.
It's just great. Even though those 13.1 miles are exactly a month way
which make nervous I know I can do it. It will be a great
accomplishment that I get to check off my list! </span></div>

It was time for us
to run ten miles. We finally were going to reach double digits. For the
entire week, I was absolutely terrified by it. I knew I had to condition
myself and prepare myself mentally for such a difficult challenge. I
ran three times throughout the week and did some core workouts to ensure
that I would be able to run 10 miles on Saturday. Even with all this
preparation, I was still terrified and I knew for certain that it was
going to be a difficult task. I wanted the week to go slowly, just so I
wouldn't have to do it, but finally Saturday arrived.<br />
<br />
I got up early
Saturday morning to eat some breakfast and make sure I was hydrated for
this run. Time passed quickly and before I knew it, I was in the car
heading to Lake Merritt with Ana Laura. Throughout the car ride, we
discussed our fears, but kept telling ourselves that we could do it. We
arrived at the lake, and we were greeted by Tod. He reminded us that we
were doing 10 miles that morning, with a smile on his face, and we sort
of just looked at him.<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
Time passed quickly, and we were doing our stretches.
Before I knew it, we were off on our run. The volunteers at RBO kept
reminding us to stay at an easy pace since we had 10 miles to go. So we
did just that. We stayed at a nice pace throughout the run and this time
we made sure that we were running on the grass and dirt paths so our
knees wouldn't be in too much pain later on. We made our first lap
around the lake and stopped for water and a chance to try GU. Ana Laura
and I were nervous about this, but figured we needed some extra energy
since we still had 6 miles to go. We grabbed Vanilla Bean flavor and
braced ourselves. We tasted the GU and were pretty disgusted by the
taste, but we finished it and drank a lot of water and set off on our
second lap around the lake. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Our pace was still good and we had actually
managed to stay with each other. Later on throughout our run, Janette
and Jasmine caught up to us and we made an even bigger pack. Our pace
continued to stay even and no one was huffing and puffing. We weren't
even feeling tired yet. Ana Laura and I definitely had the GU to thank
for that. Before we knew it, we had finished our second lap, and stopped
for another round of GU. This was our final lap and then we only had to
go half a mile out and back. Our pace had definitely increased from our
last lap and instead of running 11 minute miles, we were running 8
minute miles and we all had smiles on our faces. Our energy was still
high and it felt like we could keep going, which was good because when
we finished our third lap, we still had another mile to go. Luckily, we
still had energy to burn and we picked up the pace once again since we
were cheered on by the other Running Club members who had already
finished and Mrs. Schooler. We kept running and were questioning where
the turn around point was. Luckily, Mr. Schooler had caught up to us and
showed it to us. We turned around at that point, and ran all the way
back to the RBO tent where we were greeted by Lalo and Junior. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ana Laura and I were ecstatic because we did not
stop and we managed to stay together for the whole time. We grabbed our
chocolate milk and other goodies and went to stretch with other runners
who had just finished. It was truly a remarkable feeling. I felt like
that was the greatest thing I had ever done and I truly felt all the
progress I had made from our first run. I felt happy all over and I just
couldn't stop smiling whereas after my first run, I was completely
pooped and felt like I never wanted to run again. After this run, I
really feel like I am capable of doing anything I put my mind to. With
the marathon being less than 5 weeks away, I know I still have training
that needs to be done, especially since I have to run 3.1 more miles
than I did yesterday, but I know that I can really do it now. It doesn't
matter when I finish, but I know I will. I can't wait until the
Half-Marathon so I can yell, "I did it!" </div>

This was their first double digit run. This run had us running three times around Lake Merritt plus an additional .5 mile out and back to make it 10 miles. I was so incredibly proud of them. Many of them ran the entire time without stopping! This was also their first experience fueling up during the run by taking a Gu packet. <br />

I was so proud of all of the students for their excellent effort and progress today! One struggle I've had as coach of the running club is working with such a large group of students who run at different paces. When everyone shows up for the runs it makes it easier to group them with others who run at their pace but when some students don't make the runs it's hard. Given that we are 5 weeks away from the half marathon, I hope ALL students make EVERY run from now on!<br />
<br />
<br />
"I got kind of lost so I ended up running a little more than I should
have but nevertheless made it. I had to stop a few times in the
beginning but I caught up with Shelby and from there we ran a bit
faster. We ended up catching up with the first group and finished before
them. This practice run was somewhat easy for me. Running is difficult
when you don't have the right running partner to talk
and encourage with.
I am actually excited for the 10 mile run this Saturday, I want to see how
far I can go. I still don't know what are the requirements to be
considered a "runner" except from running but I just hope I will get in
the habit of running more on my own in the future. I want to continue
participating in these type of things, it's exciting."<br />
<br />
<br />
Karina is definitely a runner in my eyes! I hope she begins to see herself as one as well! We've incorporated some hills into our weekly runs. Even though the half marathon course is flat, we figured the hill training would be good for building up their endurance. <br />
<br />
And they're off!<br />

Two weeks ago I didn't have a babysitter and this past weekend I was in Italy. I'm looking forward to tackling 10 miles with them next Saturday.<br />
<br />Ivan recaps today's run:<br />
This past Saturday's run was awesome. It was unfortunate that Mr. and
Mrs. Schooler weren't there to encourage me to run the 5 miles
faster and faster. But I guess, I'm a big boy and I have to learn
to do things on my own. <br />
<br />
This time I did most of the run with [RBO volunteer] Nate. He is a pretty cool guy and was easy to talk to. I'm looking
forward for our next run which is going to be 10 miles. I can't wait!!!!!!!
Actually I can...<br />

What an accomplishment! They are definitely on their way to meeting the 13.1 mile goal! Eduardo recaps the run today:<br />

Running 8 miles seemed like the ultimate challenge to me. I woke up<br />
that morning thinking that I was going to die during the run. I also<br />
knew that Mr. Schooler was not going to be there, which meant that I<br />
had to set my own pace. The first couple of miles felt like nothing. I<br />
decided to run with one of the volunteers from RBO who was a<br />
ultra-marathoner. He told me about his struggles while running 105<br />
miles and gave me some useful advice. He told me that its better to<br />
start off slow and then pick up the pace towards the end. The one<br />
thing that I made sure to do this run was hydrate. After each lap<br />
around the lake I made sure I drank water before starting the next<br />
lap. I was glad I stayed hydrated because it really helped. It wasn't<br />
until close to the 6th mile where I began to grow tired. I took the<br />
volunteers advice and i picked up my pace after the 6th mile.<br />
Surprisingly, I felt good going through the last two miles and the<br />
pace felt good. As I came to the final stretch, I felt relieved and<br />
picked up my pace just a little more. Once I reached the RBO tent I<br />
was greeted by Junior and Victor. Despite my doubts, it feels good to<br />
have accomplished running 8 miles.</div>

<br />
The Wednesday run was awesome! It felt great to run 4 miles in the
middle of the week. When I began to run I felt as if I could go on for
days, it was a great feeling to have. When I first began training for
the half marathon I would of never imagined that I could run 4 miles so
easily. I felt relaxed and I was confident that I would not stop until I
returned to the school. I really enjoyed our running route, it is a bit
more challenging with the hill that we have to go up as you can feel
the burn in your calves when you head up the street. Overall, the run
was really great. I enjoyed it a lot and it was a lot of fun. I hope
that the upcoming runs are even better. Go Mustangs!

When I asked her how she felt running 7 miles as soon as she finished she wrapped it up pretty accurately for me as well when she said, "The first 5 miles were great but the last 2 were unnecessary." Well said, JJ, well said.<br />
<br />
This Saturday, we were instructed to run seven miles. The entire week I
was a little nervous since this was a two mile increase from the week
before and to make things even make exciting we had to be up and ready
to run at Lake Merritt at 8:15 in the morning. I had gone on three extra
runs throughout the week, but seven miles just seemed like a big
challenge. I got up in the morning earlier than usual on Saturday and
went to eat breakfast. Then I changed into my running clothes and my
running shoes. Once I was ready I waited around for my friend Ana Laura
to pick me up. We arrived at the lake at 8:10 and it was a lot colder
than usual. Despite that, we still had to check in do our morning
stretches and set out in our pace groups. Once the run started I was
completely surprised we were at a nice, steady, easy pace. I didn't have
any side cramps and I wasn't even breathing hard. I reached the one
mile mark and told myself there were only six more to go. Normally by
the time I was at one and a half miles I would be heavy breathing or
moving way ahead of my pace, but this time I was perfectly fine it felt
like I could go on for miles and miles and I did just that. I finished
my second mile, my third mile, and then turned around to go back around
the lake for my second lap. I still felt good and I wasn't tired one
bit. I joined a pair of other runners who are in the Running for a
Better Oakland (RBO) program and kept pace with them until my fifth mile
until one of the girls had to stop to tie her shoe. This was the
challenge. The first five miles were so easy it didn't even feel like I
was using any energy. It all just came so natural but each step I took
after that fifth mile became such a challenge. I kept my same pace, but I
could feel my body getting more and more tired. I just kept telling
myself, "No walking. You cannot walk." That inspired me to keep going
and that I did I completely my second lap around the lake and as a
passed by I heard Lalo and Mrs. Schoolers cheering me on. This inspired
me to keep going and finish my last mile I had to go half a mile out and
come back. That half way mark seemed to take forever to reach, but I
got there, by this time I was heavy breathing, but I kept going. When I
was almost done I saw Ms. Hernandez cheering me on and this gave me the
little bit of energy I needed to run up the hill. Lalo was waiting there
to give me a high five and I was done. I completed my seven miles,
running and it felt like the greatest thing I had ever done. I had
completed more the half of the half-marathon distance and I was very
proud of myself and everyone else.<br />
